Continuing Decrease for Helicopter Accidents in Key Regions Around the World

The International Helicopter Safety Team (www.IHST.org) has gathered accident information from countries across the globe and continues to seeing an encouraging trend of safer civil helicopter operations. Preliminary 2017 data from 49 countries show that most have decreasing totals for both fatal and non-fatal accidents. Looking forward, the teams plan to place a stronger focus on human factors and safety actions based on empirical analysis.

IHST Partner Releases New Helicopter Flight Instructor Guide

WASHINGTON DC – The European partner of the International Helicopter Safety Team (www.IHST.org) has updated and released a comprehensive 168-page guide for helicopter flight instructors based on extensive feedback from the helicopter training community. The goal of the guide, which was developed in coordination with the Australian Government Civil Aviation Safety Authority, is to provide a primary resource for instructors and a strong foundation for safe helicopter operations.

USHST Safety Experts Will Offer 13 Workshops at HELI-EXPO 2018

Members of the United States Helicopter Safety Team (www.USHST.org) will be providing their safety advice for Heli-Expo participants in Las Vegas at 13 different workshops in a wide variety of topics.

The USHST promotes safety and works to reduce accidents through a government and industry cooperative effort that has resulted in a decrease in U.S. civil helicopter accidents since the organization’s inception in 2013. During that same time period, fatal accidents also have decreased.

The U.S. Helicopter Safety Team (www.USHST.org) has completed its comprehensive analysis of the root causes of fatal accidents and has developed 22 measurable safety enhancements aimed at reducing fatalities.

U.S. Helicopter Accident Rate Inches Upward During First Half of 2017

WASHINGTON DC – Accident rates for the U.S. civil helicopter industry rose slightly along with summer temperatures during the first half of 2017.  As spring turned into summer across the country, the total accident rate from January through June was 3.37 per 100,000 flight hours, compared to an accident rate in 2016 of 3.16. 

This breaks a downward trend in helicopter accidents since 2013, but there is hope that a reduction will be achieved by the end of 2017 in order to maintain an improving safety record for the industry.
