U.S. Helicopter Safety Team Completes New Analysis on Fatal Accidents

The IHST will have a major presence at HELI-EXPO 2011, at the Orange County Convention Center, with a public briefing (IHST Update) on its international progress in Room S.330A/B, Sunday, March 6, at 1 – 3 pm. Workshops to address how to effectively use JHSIT toolkits are scheduled as follow: Safety Management Systems (SMS) Workshop, Sunday, March 6, 1 – 5 pm in Room S.330D; Flight Data Monitoring Workshop, Monday, March 7, 8 am – 5 pm in Room S.320A/B; and Training Workshop, Monday, March 7, 8 am – 12 pm in Room S.321. Don’t miss the US JHSIT Infastructure Workshop - Creating a safer operating environment —helipads, an improved and available weather grid, instrument flight, and communications, on Tuesday, March 8, 8 am to 12 pm in Room S.230A/B.

The European Helicopter Safety Team (EHEST) was proud to play host to the Fourth International Helicopter Safety Symposium held on Sunday 3rd October 2010 at Estoril in Portugal. This event was followed by a day of briefings and interactive workshops (Monday 4th October 2010) covering three of the International Helicopter Safety Team’s highest payoff safety enhancement areas: Safety Management Systems (SMS), Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring (HFDM), and Training.

Administrator Randy Babbitt of the Federal Aviation Administration and Vice Chairman Robert Sumwalt of the National Transportation Safety Board will be featured speakers at the International Helicopter Safety Symposium taking place in Fort Worth, TX, on Nov. 8-9.  The theme of the fifth annual symposium for the worldwide helicopter industry will be Human Factors: our Collective Challenge – Our Individual Responsibility.

The event is a gathering of helicopter operators, manufacturers, service providers, trade associations, academia, government regulators, pilots, mechanics, instructors, and other industry participants from across the globe aimed at finding ways to drive the helicopter accident rate lower.  Organizations involved in the symposium also are members of the International Helicopter Safety Team, which was created in 2005 with a mission of reducing the worldwide civil helicopter accident rate by 80 percent before 2016

On the first day of the symposium, FAA Administrator Babbitt will discuss aviation safety in the industry and on the second day, NTSB Vice Chairman Sumwalt will offer remarks on his agency’s top 10 recommendations involving human factors in helicopters accidents.

Other featured speakers at the event include Dr. Patrick Hudson, professor at The Netherlands’ Delft University of Technology, and Hooper Harris, Accident Investigation Manager in the FAA’s Office of Accident Investigation and Prevention.
