IHST Finds Out “Where in the World” Helicopter Safety is Pursued

From a survey of civil helicopter operators located in key regions around the world, the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST) has gained a broader understanding of where safety initiatives are being implemented. 

Worldwide, the top IHST-recommended safety initiatives are the implementation of Safety Management Systems and the support for structured training. These are followed in order by structured maintenance programs, Flight Data Monitoring and Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS).

U.S. Civil Helicopter Accidents Continue to Decline During 2015

FORT WORTH, TX – If the first half of the year is any indication, then 2015 is shaping up to be a very good year for civil helicopter safety in the United States. Total accidents are down 28 percent during the first six months of 2015 compared to the same period last year. In addition, according to the United States Helicopter Safety Team (www.USHST.org), the number of accidents has been cut nearly in half compared to 2006.

IHST Applauds New Helicopter Safety Partnership in Brazil

The International Helicopter Safety Team (www.IHST.org) today welcomes the development of an enhanced safety partnership in Brazil with the creation of the Brazilian Helicopter Safety Team (BHEST). The organization reflects a new partnership between the current IHST Brazil group (www.ihstbrasil.org) and the Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC - Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil).

BHEST will follow IHST guidelines, mission, and goals as well as ANAC regulations and orientation. The first Co-Chairs of BHEST will be Antonio Modesto of HELIBRAS and Bruno Villela of the Brazilian Navy. A representative of ANAC will act as the BHEST Secretary. Current IHST Brazil members will be appointed to safety sub-committees to be established under the new BHEST organization and new members will be welcome to support the new team.

U.S. Helicopter Accident Rate Cut by More Than Half During Past 10 Years

FORT WORTH, TX – On the heels of the news announced last month that the total number of U.S. civil helicopter accidents had been reduced to the lowest level since the early 1980s, new accident rate data is highlighting an even stronger improvement.  During 2014, the U.S. civil helicopter industry experienced 3.64 accidents per 100,000 flight hours.  This is a 26 percent reduction compared to 2013 and a 54 percent reduction compared to the 2001-05 baseline accident rate.
